Locs Care Instructions
Proper care is essential to maintaining healthy, beautiful locs. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment and keep your krown looking its best.
Avoid Getting Locs Wet for 2 Weeks
First 2 WeeksAfter your installation, keep your locs completely dry for the first two weeks. This allows the locs to set properly and maintain their shape. When showering, use a shower cap or wrap your hair securely. Avoid swimming, rain exposure, and heavy sweating during this critical period.
Pro tip: Use a satin-lined shower cap for best protection.
Sleep with a Satin or Silk Bonnet
Nightly RoutineProtect your locs every night by sleeping with a satin or silk bonnet, or on a satin/silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and create friction that can cause frizz, breakage, and unraveling. Satin and silk preserve moisture and reduce friction, keeping your locs looking fresh longer.
Pro tip: A satin pillowcase works as a backup if your bonnet slips off.
Use Lightweight Oil on Scalp
Scalp CareNourish your scalp with a lightweight oil such as jojoba, argan, or tea tree oil. Apply a small amount directly to the scalp between your locs — not on the locs themselves — to prevent buildup. Massage gently to stimulate blood flow and promote healthy hair growth. Avoid heavy creams, butters, or thick products that cause residue buildup.
Pro tip: Apply oil 1–2 times per week, focusing on dry or itchy areas.
Retwist Every 4–6 Weeks
MaintenanceSchedule regular retwist appointments every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain the neat appearance of your locs and encourage proper locking. Waiting longer than 6 weeks can cause excessive matting, thinning at the roots, and increased pricing. Consistent maintenance is the key to healthy, long-lasting locs.
Pro tip: Book your next retie before leaving your appointment to secure your spot.
Avoid Heavy Products
Product UseStay away from heavy waxes, thick butters, and product-heavy stylers. These cause significant buildup inside your locs that is very difficult to remove and can lead to mold, mildew, and weakened locs over time. Opt for water-based, residue-free products specifically formulated for locs. When in doubt, less is more.
Pro tip: Always check product labels — avoid beeswax, lanolin, and petroleum-based ingredients.
Additional Tips
Sun & UV Protection
Wear a hat or use UV-protective spray when spending extended time in the sun to prevent dryness and color fading.
Washing Your Locs
After the initial 2-week period, wash locs every 1–2 weeks with a residue-free, clarifying shampoo. Dilute shampoo with water for easier application.
Protecting New Growth
Between retwist appointments, gently palm-roll new growth to encourage locking and keep roots neat.
